in our mystical dreams
or in our grounded life
demons present themselves
requiring our attention
often appearing as
hydra-headed problems
one by one, we tackle them
or little by little, they grind us down
sometimes, we can banish them
other times, they multiply
defeating that which haunts us
a lifelong task
the world wants one-liners
to solve sentences long problems
never understanding
quick fixes and bandaids
on mortal wounds
is what got us here
i was good enough…
when you stole your son’s savings and needed to replace it
when your credit sucked and i had to be the executor instead
when your husband beat the crap out of you and you needed a place to stay
when you needed money to buy gifts at Christmas
when you asked me to do a fundraising campaign for your charity
but i’m the asshole
drunks tell no lies
they say
but when they’re sober
they tell no truths
liquid courage
they say
but it’s more like
real communication’s anesthesia
honesty
needs to be shared
person to person
with heads clear
otherwise, the path down liquid lane makes
hard times
get harder
direction is lost
focus gone
and the urge
to share
what needs to be said
just adds up to a larger tab
