Fleeing

The gadgets and trash of others lay strewn about as the refugee checked in with the staff at the immigration center. He tried to crack a smile but, having fled through the “safe” corridor from Guatemala to the border, he wondered—would he live better? Adelmo followed the track millions of other young men pursued, wanting freedom from the oppression and corruption in their country. Sure, there were losses along the way, but it was worth it. Every last one of them who tried knew their chances were slim. At least they wouldn’t be a target of the drug cartels anymore.

My Disappearance

Inspired by Eugi’s Weekly Prompt – Nature & Reena’s Exploration Challenge #185

it’s my nature
to withdraw
when unbalanced
for no reason at all

i retreat to a safe space
like bear cubs denning
i’m not languishing
i’m dormant with melancholy

seeking shelter protects my soul
giving respite and comfort
surrounded by nothing but time
it revives me
