Beware The Pack

The stranger gathered together his pack of loyal dogs. Why would anyone keep so many? The mangy beasts would sniff and scratch at the branches under their feet and tilt their heads in curiosity at the sounds in the forest. They were scrounging for bones, those left over from a previous hunt. I kept silent, my words bouncing around internally only, for it was only me, not we anymore. Charles took a blow to the head from a feathered stone the stranger launched. Thankfully, I wasn’t seen, hidden in the large thicket. Otherwise, that might have been my fate, too.
