Civility’s Demise

The value of the past eludes us.

The same mistakes on repeat.

Reflection would serve us well.

Empathy would too.

Oh, realize the worth of our tragic and harsh history!

Please only go forward, not back.

I worry for my children and future generations.

Sobbing, losing hope with each act of terror.

As I watch this world becoming one of hate and destruction,

I feel defeated.

Filled with sadness,

I still love.

But is it enough?

  1. Seems our history’s on loop, like a catchy but tragic song. Empathy’s the beat drop we need. It seems like society is spiraling on fast forward because of the skip button so we go back to the catchy song faster. Reflection needs to be honest for individuals and society to learn from. Reflection is the remix we need to shake our senses.

    1. While I do think “living” has gotten easier in the present, humans continue to display barbaric behaviors towards one another. Yes, empathy is something crucially missing on so many levels. Thanks so much for your comments!

  2. So poignant and relevant for our current trouble times. I love the last lines, you echo what many of us must think:

    “I still love.

    But is it enough?”

I think of course it all counts, we can never share enough of it, or allow ourselves to feel it. I guess love + meaningful action is even stronger. Cos every tiny gesture matters. Enjoyed this deep-thinking write, you got me thinking too! <3

    1. I’m sad that it has become worse in our world, but eternally grateful that I am surrounded by friends and family that can give me some semblance of sanity as I continue on my journey. <3 Thank you for your kind words, Carolyn!

  3. Susi, your poem hits hard and resonates deeply. The raw emotion and stark truth in each line create a powerful impact. The call for reflection and empathy is so crucial. Your words capture the concerns for the future with such poignant honesty. It’s a beautifully written piece, and your expression of love amidst the worry is both moving and powerful. 💔🌟
