In The Mundane Moments

i take a step back to refocus
ordinary tasks beckon
i watch silently, attentively
as the rivulets of water splash in the basin

thoughts begin to cascade in
jumbled and incoherent at first
yet sentences start to form
as the words assemble reasonably

quick, let me write that down
to capture the emotions and the intent
conveying my thoughts is such satisfaction
even in the boring routine of the day

This piece resonated with me. I imagine it will for many of you as well!

If miners wear cotton-linen beneath their uniform, it can darken like the coal they caress on the job. In dumping the shards into a cart, a raucous cacophony bounces around the mine. They labor strenuously, day after day. Many miners covet a rich man’s lifestyle, call for one less arduous. Sadly, their station in life leaves them coated with a daily cover of dust, the color as black as what comes from the walls. At shift’s end, they hang their filthy pickaxes on the built-in column. The sun’s corona, an unusual sight, greets them at the entrance of the mineshaft.

Mike Martin had a reputation for being a hard boss. Not just your run-of-the-mill difficult but the exceptionally prickish kind. The people who worked for him took a lot of abuse – along with condescension, irrational demands, and a gross amount of unwillingness to compromise.

Quitting him meant you wore a badge of honor and ended up in the “I survived Mike Martin” Club! No more taking his shit, and your life would return to sanity once more.

Hurray! He just lost another employee. Poor unable-to-take-no-for-an answer Mike, pretty soon he’ll be an empire of one fending for himself.

Justice.

**Side note – I just started a remote administrative support position. That’s what prompted this piece. Two days in and it really has been exciting, but feeling a bit overwhelmed! So much to learn, so many tasks to perform. I know this feeling of not having it all under control shall pass soon, it’s only part-time and nothing I do will be the end of the world if I get something wrong initially. Keep putting one foot in front of the other…

Wish me luck! :)

Stinking supervisor, have to work second shift again. It’s like he has a grudge against me or something. And the recently posted schedule has me working the upcoming holiday too. Hogwash! I need some time off, damn it!

I could see the feral cat in the yard on the surveillance camera. Its tail gave a little wiggle as if to say hi. Feeling a tinge of homesickness, the separation from my kitty made me wish he were here now. Might have to sneak him in if these shifts continue. But my damn supervisor would probably be rigid and enforce the No Pets rule. I hate my job.

Ugh, I felt ill all of a sudden. Chills passed through my body, and I felt my bile gurgling up as nausea set in. I became light-headed and wobbly standing on my wedge heels. And then I purged, all over myself. As soon as the last bit had come up, I went to wash myself off.

I think my body is trying to tell me something.
