Muted

tossed on life’s trash heap
been silenced by tragedy
hard to rebuild strength

Sadly, the inspiration for this piece comes from the recent devastation of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, specifically regarding the horrific situation my dear friend, Gail Leadenham, had to endure. Thankfully, she is alive, but she did get injured. She lost her house and the wonderful Cerebus, her puppy, who I got to know when I visited this past August. You might remember the Wordles she and I wrote while I was there—Two Creatives Getting Creative.

While my poem speaks to the incredible sadness of the situation, I hope you can find it in your hearts to aid her during this challenging time, showering her with love from afar and helping her return to some normalcy with your support. Every bit will help! Thank you!

Imminent Danger

survival hits different
for every being on this earth
adults and children
kept and free animals
even our beloved planet
facing physical hardships
whether risking living
with little food
or minuscule comfort
or none at all
whether beat into submission
before they could find their voice
or any number of unbearable situations
through no other reason
than a perfect storm
coming together by chance
life’s variables colliding just because
those unlucky enough
to always be on the end of surviving
the punishments doled out
by indiscriminate and unfortunate circumstances
or by forceful, living monsters
created by an evil social consciousness
insinuating their vileness
into the vulnerable lives of the innocent

survival hits different
and sometimes
not at all

In Mourning

we are suffocating
in the plumes of silence

hopes and dreams
put on hold

uncertainty
in our present

plans shelved
for another tomorrow

a fierce struggle to live
while quietly dying

anger, isolation, despair
this too shall pass they say

… but not soon enough for some

We Can Rebuild

vanity led
gross disfigurement
greedy doctors
botched bodies

eager saviors
healing wounds
repairing harm
restoring normalcy

grateful patients
regretting decisions
blame themselves
screw vanity

Life Is Off

moving purposefully
in this small space
determined
idle productivity

everything
and everyone
standing still
while the world shifts

close contact
feels extinguished
but not
the craving

a need for warmth
in a world
that seems to
have gone cold

a temporary situation
they say
hopefully
this depression is too

May you all have enough distance to be safe and
connected with sufficient love to remain sane.

this natural disaster
is bringing us to our knees
even those who lead
or inspire us
are shedding tears
losing hope
breaking down
not able to guide
the few strong
of us left
this domino effect
a chain reaction
to the unknown
makes us all feel
like tumbling down

Real Fam

Untitled

when the world
fucks with you
again
and
it hurts
these stars
of the world
will hold your pain
in their hearts
searing their love
into you
use their invisible shield
to safeguard themselves
from your anger
feed you
clothe you
soothe the aches
inflicted by circumstance
get wet shoulders
hug you
and
stay
when you
haven’t showered in a week

What the world needs is more of these people.
