on this day of gratitude
my thoughts extend beyond just today
every day
of every year
i’m grateful for my existence
even and especially
when feeling a sense of otherness
in this world around me
for the part of my life
where i was told to fit inside the box
the one society wanted me to reside in
i tried to conform
but that didn’t last long
the oppression felt was too harsh
my freedom was non-negotiable
as i reflect on the peace around me
take in all that i’ve achieved and witnessed
thankfulness is reserved for more than just this day
high regard for who we are, who we love, and who we respect
should be acknowledged every day
each for their uniqueness and the joy they bring us
