Cupid Mis-fired

Gaby’s face glowed in my direction while her eyes, sparkling embers, promised me the world. A slight dip in the conversation allowed me a moment to fantasize about getting to first base tonight, but quickly, my thoughts turned to sorrow.

“I have an early day tomorrow, Kendall, and it is getting late.”

I absent-mindedly gripped the silver spoon on the table, the glimmer from the lights and trim creating wild chain-like patterns before my eyes.

“Oh, okay. Sure. I’ll get the check,” signaling to the waiter. I felt faint, yet free and in a trance all at the same time.

My World Unraveling

I pulled the string to find an old reel from an ancient tape recorder—probably recordings from a long time ago off the radio. Not that I had a desperate need to hear what was on it, but who isn’t interested in particles of a past world? It’s always cool to lose some time in this life, giving oneself over to another era, whether it was a decade we experienced or not.

It turns out that it was a confession made by my grandfather, admitting he was responsible for my mother’s death. Letting her live equated to him being jailed forever.

Jerica put a spell on him the way any true seductress would – leaving Oliver wanting a truce from the style of punishment he was receiving. She wasn’t being kind at all but rather a jinx to him. But was she? Oliver ultimately decides to remain in denial and instead shows his favor towards her out of kindness for the child they had created during the rapture. The baby was a gift from the heavens! That is until he saw the forked tongue and blazing red eyes when it began to cry.

What kind of sorcery is this? he exclaimed.

Rituals In The Ether

The game had a secret twist and must be performed in the rain! Why? The glass orb, with its knitted covering, passed from one person to another, seemed like an absurd habit, an obsession. But that is how it was done here. I remember a flash of lightning in the sky jarred us to huddle closer. Why weren’t we taken inside? The leader turned the pages of the ragged book that held all the incantations, and the scars on her fingers reminded everyone how dangerous this was. Then…

My roommate shakes me awake from the dreams I had been having.

Ladies And Gentlemen!

It looked to be a nasty burn, second-degree. Jasmine’s sniffling about her accident didn’t abate. Dios Mio! She had a show this evening! How was she going to perform? Quickly, I turned to lock her door, keeping prying eyes out of our hair. This incident was like an echo from another time, weirdly similar to what happened to her mother. Jasmine better hope that it fades away. For now, we had to figure out how to power through tonight. The crowd’s voices were getting louder; backstage, I could hear some of her friends whispering excitedly. The show must go on!

Not Puff, Not Magic Either

With my arms bound behind my back and my feet tied together, how would I escape the dragon? Positioned at the cave’s opening, it made his head gleam as if he had a halo on top of it. Then, a thick fog began to hide the sun, dimming the cave. I thought of clawing to the back, finding a tunnel I could escape through. Feeling broken, my thoughts spiraling out of control, I knew I had to sit here for a spell. Feeling hollow and spent, I tried to trace my steps back to when the crimson dragon captured me.

Doomed

My survival instinct was strong despite my clothes being sodden from the current deluge, but still, the fear about my potential demise rose within me. The sludge gained height in the streets from the past rains, signaling danger. I didn’t know how much higher it would rise and all the damage it would create. The climate finally passed the point of no return. I began to trudge through the waist-deep water toward the safe inner sanctum of the highest building in our city. I was one of the few who made it. Was our currently elected despot enjoying the show?

Hidden In The Shadows

The tricks playing out before my eyes made my head hum and cast doubt on my sanity. I could see monsters appearing out of the shadows, their ire and strength evident. Indeed, they would snap me into bits if they had the opportunity. I clung to my wooden staff, trying to slow my breathing so I wouldn’t faint, and tried to gather my wits about myself. I needed a distraction. A bright flash of light could confuse the monsters, and I could swiftly evade them. Otherwise, one touch from their slimy claws would end me. Here’s hoping I do succeed.

Great Ambitions

No one could deny it was a catastrophe; the apples, originally gift-wrapped up exquisitely in a basket intended as an enchantment for a young lady, enticing her to sing and chatter with OOOs and AHHs, were lying rotting by the door, flies buzzing and feasting on their smelly nastiness.

Oh, how I crave for things always to go right, not these hit-or-miss moments where my angel wings disintegrate in frustration. If only I could latch on to some catalyst that would not limit me from performing at one hundred percent at all times! If only I could be a god!

Party Daze

I wanted to feel alluring tonight; however, my black roots showed negligence instead. Then, running into that spider web made me look ridiculous, and my heart flutter—romance wasn’t in the cards for me tonight.

Looking around the room, I swore I saw a ghost! Who invited Gary, and why would he come when I had so much dirt on him and held so many of his ruinous secrets?

Everything around me glitters, the walls and all the floors speckled with light from the beam on the glass disco ball. My head begins to spin; I feel destined to pass out.
