there’s an elephant in the room
my sister and i were named after the pets
the fur babies were apparently the favorites
my parents were lazy or we weren’t sublime enough
they couldn’t even be bothered to do this small task
to gift us an original name
maybe it’s because the dog and the cat
brought them more joy than their own kids
we’ll never know now
slackers
**My sister was named after an aunt, and the dog’s name. Everyone knew her by the name of the dog. I got the cat’s name and my mother’s name, but was called by the cat’s name. Ultimately, my sister ended up dropping the aunt’s name, and I dropped my mother’s name. I guess we liked our pet names.

Hahaha, I don’t know if I should laugh with you or cry for you! I don’t think it is that strange for children to think something like this and it would definitely follow you into adulthood.

This story is the truth, not something I pulled out of the air. I do think it’s strange that my parents would do this.

Oh no! I’m sorry. But I suppose you turned out alright despite all this!

I did, for sure! It does not change the fact they were not good parents.

Well, Susi, I’m looking for the positive… I suppose you have to be thankful the cat wasn’t called ‘Tiddles’ 🤔- Susi is a nice name 😊

The positive is that I feel like I am “a Susi” :) Thanks, AJ!

These tidbits are so interesting. 😊
My cousin (6 years older) was the only child in the family before me. He chose the name Reena, after a classmate of his, and the wish of the youngest was accepted. 😊
For years, I badgered him about it as the name rhymes with other common names like Leena, Meena etc. and I did not like it. I would have preferred exclusivity.

Wow! I’m surprised he was given that honor! I would have thought parents are more territorial about it. So if you had exclusivity, what would you have picked? Thanks for reading and sharing.

Hmmm… That’s something to think about. Maybe a word that meant “unique” or “one of a kind.” 😊😀

My second name is ‘Richard’ after my uncle, but he was always called “Uncle Dick” … I wonder what mom was thinking when she named me, “Ivor Dick” …
