Stoking The Fire

nights like these are a comfort
a robust blaze with friends
or even just by myself
i focus on the peace surrounding me
the crackle of the wood soothes me
my mind embraces serenity

with the fire flickering
my thoughts meander in and out
of this continuous combustion before me
from dark to searingly bright
i see the eye of a demon cat
tantalizingly dancing in the pit
an invitation to dance if only in spirit

like life, this burning pit cycles through
being brilliantly alive
to times when it just smolders
we owe it to keep it going
every now and then
we need a thorough rekindling
